We, as a society, as the song says, 'don't know what you [we've] got 'til it's gone'.
Unless you're living in a third world country, or a region that is war-torn, do you/we realize exactly what we have.
[Relatively] clean, air, water, shelter, food...we are very fortunate. Very. And, pointing at myself, I take it for granted.
The most recent example is when I went to run hot water to do a sink full of dirty dishes. [Yes, I do the dishes] I turned the tap, and as usual, left my hand under the running water, waiting for the warmer water before beginning to fill the sink. I waited. And waited. And I waited some more. No hot water. Come to find out, the old hot water heater [21 years later] had given up the ghost. Yes, I was shocked when there was no hot water available.
We are simply lucky, and blessed, enough that we can enjoy these things. Perhaps we as a society can look at these not-so-fortunate countries and learn a thing or two: be thankful for what you have; I've seen some of their faces, and most times it doesn't take a whole lot to bring a smile to their faces. Let's live and learn.
